Akamai Cloud (Linode) BYOIP: your own IP addresses via a tunnel

Kein veröffentlichtes VerfahrenUnited StatesGeprüft anhand der Dokumentation von Akamai Cloud (Linode) am Artikel auf Englisch

Akamai Cloud, formerly Linode, does not offer BYOIP, as far as its own statements and documentation show. In May 2022 an answer in Linode's name on Linode's community site, marked Best Answer, said: "As of right now, we do not support bringing your IP to Linode." A Linode support reply that a customer posted on 30 April 2023 said the same: "At this time BYOIP isn't a feature we support." We found nothing newer on 17 October 2026. Akamai's cloud documentation, which we searched on 15 October 2026, has no page on bringing your own addresses, and the Reserved IPs it added on 1 July 2026 keep addresses that Akamai assigns.

The tunnel route

Your addresses can still reach a Linode without Akamai announcing them. A network that can announce the block does so, and a GRE or WireGuard tunnel carries its traffic to your Linode and back. The Linode sees the addresses as its own (how the tunnel works).

Four things to get right:

  • Replies go back through the tunnel. Route traffic from your block into the tunnel with a policy route. Sent straight out of the Linode, it would carry a source address that Akamai did not assign.
  • Mind the Cloud Firewall. Its rules take TCP, UDP, ICMP and IPENCAP, and IPENCAP matches only protocols 4 and 41, not GRE's 47. Behind a Cloud Firewall that drops by default, use WireGuard and allow its UDP port from the far end of the tunnel.
  • Set the MTU. 1,476 bytes for GRE, around 1,420 for WireGuard, with MSS clamping if the Linode routes the block on to other machines.
  • Any size. A tunnel also works for fewer than 256 addresses, down to a single one, which BYOIP never does.

Where RTM Networks fits

We announce a block and deliver it to your Linode over GRE or WireGuard, in any size down to a single address (GRE and WireGuard tunnels). If you want a whole block of your own, we lease /24s and larger from our own RIPE NCC address space (lease IPv4), and sell blocks in the RIPE NCC, ARIN and APNIC regions. Tell us the Linode region and how many addresses you need. Other providers: BYOIP guides.

FAQ

Akamai Cloud (Linode) BYOIP: Fragen

Does Akamai Cloud (Linode) support BYOIP?

Not as far as Akamai's own pages show. In May 2022 an answer in Linode's name on its community site said Linode does not support bringing your own IP addresses, and a Linode support reply posted in April 2023 said the same. Akamai's cloud documentation, which we searched again on 17 October 2026, has no BYOIP page.

Do Akamai's Reserved IPs let me bring my own addresses?

No. Reserved IPs, added on 1 July 2026, let you keep a public IPv4 address from Akamai in one region, even after the Linode is deleted. They take no addresses of yours.

Can I still use my own IP addresses on a Linode?

Yes, over a tunnel. A network that can announce your block does so and carries the traffic to your Linode over GRE or WireGuard, and replies go back the same way. Behind an Akamai Cloud Firewall, WireGuard is the easier choice, because the firewall has no rule type for GRE.

Does Akamai announce customer prefixes anywhere?

In Prolexic, its DDoS protection service, whose routed option asks for an assigned /24 or larger and BGP. Prolexic protects your own network; nothing on Akamai's pages ties it to Linodes.
