BYOIP: Using Your Own IPv4 Addresses with Cloud Providers

BYOIPCloudAWSGuide

What is BYOIP?

Bring Your Own IP (BYOIP) is a feature offered by major cloud providers that allows you to use your own public IPv4 addresses within their cloud infrastructure. Instead of relying on the cloud provider's IP pool, you can bring addresses that you own or lease and use them with your cloud-hosted services.

Why Use BYOIP?

There are several compelling reasons to bring your own IPs to the cloud:

  • IP Reputation: Maintain the reputation you've built on your existing IP addresses
  • Compliance: Meet regulatory requirements that mandate specific IP ranges
  • Migration: Seamlessly migrate services to the cloud without changing IPs
  • Cost Savings: AWS charges for public IPv4 addresses - BYOIP can reduce costs
  • Brand Consistency: Keep the same IPs your customers and partners know

AWS BYOIP

Amazon Web Services was one of the first to support BYOIP. Here's what you need to know:

Requirements

  • Minimum /24 prefix size
  • Must be registered with an RIR (RIPE, ARIN, APNIC, etc.)
  • ROA (Route Origin Authorization) must be created
  • Address range must be clean and not advertised elsewhere

AWS BYOIP Benefits

Since February 2024, AWS charges for public IPv4 addresses. With BYOIP, you can:

  • Avoid paying for public IPs you already own or lease
  • Reduce cloud infrastructure costs significantly

Google Cloud BYOIP

Google Cloud Platform supports BYOIP with similar requirements:

  • Minimum /24 prefix
  • ROA configuration required
  • Supports both IPv4 and IPv6
  • Available in all GCP regions

Azure BYOIP

Microsoft Azure also supports BYOIP:

  • Called "Custom IP Prefix" in Azure
  • Minimum /24 for IPv4
  • Supports both regional and global deployment
  • Integrates with Azure Public IP resources

Other Providers Supporting BYOIP

  • Vultr: Supports BYOIP with BGP sessions
  • OVH: Supports BYOIP with IP failover
  • Oracle Cloud: Custom IP prefix support
